사람이 살 수 있는 곳이면 어디든지 잘 살 수 있다. 삶은 법원에서 요구하는 것 안에서  즉 법안에서 잘 살 수 있다. 

 

사실 오늘 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스 황제의 얘기는 뜻을 이해하기가 어려워서 한참을 들여다봤다.아직도 잘 모르겠다.

영어 실력이 부족한 탓, 직역이 아닌 본질의 뜻을 파악하기에 아직 내가 부족한 탓.

William Lee Miller, in his unique"ethical biography" of Abraham Lincon, makes an important about this famous president: our deification of the man makes a point to pretend he wasn't a politi-cian. We focus on his humble beginnings, his self-education, his beautiful speeches. But we gloss over his job, which was politics. That misses what was so truly impressive about him: Lincoln was all the things he was compassionate, deliberate, fair, open-minded, and purposeful-while being a politician. He was what we admire in a profession we believe to be filled exclusively with the opposite of that type of person. Priciples and pragmatism are not at odds. Whether you live in the snake pit of Washington, D.C., work among the materialism of wall street, or grew up in a closed-minded small town, you can live well. Plenty of others have.

 

 

윌리엄 리 밀러(William Lee Miller)는 에이브러햄 링컨(Abraham Lincon)의 독특한 "윤리적 전기"에서 이 유명한 대통령에 대해 중요하게 생각합니다. 그 사람에 대한 우리의 신격화는 그가 정치인이 아닌 척하는 것을 강조합니다. 

우리는 그의 보잘것없는 시작, 독학, 아름다운 연설에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.

하지만 정작 우리는 그의 직업인 정치를 무시합니다. 그것은 그에게서 정말 인상적이었던 점을 놓치고 있는것입니다.

링컨은 정치가인동안 동정심이 있고, 신중하고, 공정하고, 개방적이며, 목적이 있는 모든 것이었습니다.

그는 우리가 그런 유형의 사람과 정반대의 사람으로만 채워져 있다고 믿는 직업에서 우리가 존경할 수 있는 사람이었습니다. ( 대부분의 사람들은 정치에는 그런 사람이 없다고 생각을 하지만 그는 그렇지 않았다.)

원칙과 실용주의는 상충(대립)되지 않습니다. (= 조화를 이룰수 있다. )

워싱턴 D.C.의 뱀 구덩이에 살든, 월스트리트의 물질주의 속에서 일하든, 폐쇄적인 작은 마을에서 자랐든 잘 살 수 있습니다. 다른 많은 사람들이 그랬습니다.
